Practical 2: The
practical has been posted and will
take place week in lab the week after Thanksgiving break. I'll
will have the same format and grading as the first practical
(though the specific scientific abilities might be different). Feel free to go over the practical and discuss it with
your group members as much as you want before you show up to the
practical. |

Physics 194 Registration:
Many of you have sent me emails asking about special permission
numbers for Physics 194, mostly for lab sections. This morning
we increased the number of spots in each lab section so many of
them are not open. But, we know there will still be conflicts
and not everyone will be able to get into the sections they
want. So, here's how special permission numbers will be handed:
Send an email to Stacey Jacobs (sljacobs@physics.rutgers.edu)
and let her know what your situation is. She's the Physics Dept.
undergraduate secretary. Include your full name, RUID, and
a list of section numbers (section numbers, not index numbers)
that fit your schedule in order of preference. You need to be as
flexible as possible or it might be hard to get you in to a
section. If you don't have an actual conflict and you are trying
to switch sections for convenience, DO NOT contact Stacey. We
are going to have enough trouble getting everyone in to the
course as it is. Thanks! |

There were a few errors in the HW. The last two problems should

Exam 2 Review Session:
There will be a review session for exam 2 on Tuesday Nov. 3rd

our TAs. Please come with lots of specific questions! |

Exam 1: The
solutions have been posted so
please compare your work to them. The grades have be entered
into the gradebook as well. The gradebook will now calculate a
projected grade for you. This is the grade you would get if the
semester ended rigth now. This grade assumes you'll get the same
percentage score on exam 2 and the final that you got on exam 1.
This means that if you improve on the remaining exams your grade
can go up by a lot. |

Study Group Attendance:
Because it wasn't clear to everyone that study groups started
this past week we won't be counting absences. Starting this
coming Monday we will. Remember, if you miss 2 study group
sessions your spot could be given to someone on the waiting
list. |
|
Study Group Update:
Both Monday study groups have
been moved up half an hour. They now begin at 3:30pm and 5:30pm. |
|
Lab Homework (LHW) Solutions:
The solutions for LHW1 have been posted.
I'll be posting solutions to every assignment you do in the
class once they've been handed in. When you get your graded work
back, make sure you spend some time comparing your work with the
solutions, even if you got maximum credit. This will help your
learning a lot. |
|
Study Group Update:
I made a mistake in assigning people to the Monday 4pm study
group. Please check the signup list again. Sorry for the
confusion. |
|
Study Groups:
Study groups have been assigned and start this coming week. Rosters can be found
here. |
- First "Recitation" Homework:
The first Recitation HomeWork (RHW1) has been
posted. It's the online
diagnostic I mentioned in lecture today. All the details are
in the document that you can download from the
downloads page. Remember that
it must be completed online by 12pm on Monday Sept. 7th.
- Course website:
Welcome to the course website! This page is where important
announcements about the course are made, so check back
frequently.

- Welcome to Physics for
Sciences I: My name is Michael Gentile and
I'm the instructor for the course. All the information
you'll need about the course can be found on this website,
so have a look around and read through everything. I'll be
using this page to make announcements so check back
frequently. Feel free to ask me any questions you have by
email. I'm also the website
administrator, so if you have any suggestions about how to
improve the site, or notice any problems with it please
let me know.
- Registration:
When you register for the course make sure you register for
both a recitation and a lab. You must register for both
since the lab/recitation/lecture are completely integrated.
Even though it is a single course you do have to
specifically register for both a recitation and a lab.
- First course meetings:
Lecture and labs
will meet the
first week of class starting Wednesday, Sept. 2nd. Because
of the strange schedule the second week of class recitations
will NOT meet until the third week of classes,
starting Monday, Sept. 14th.
- Important required reading:
A few important documents have been posted above. Please
download and read them right away.
- Scientific abilities
rubrics: You will learn about these in
lecture and lab the first week of class. They are available
for
download, so feel free to have
a look at them ahead of time. You will use these to guide
you in learning the scientific reasoning abilities that are
a primary focus of the course. They will also be used to
grade your lab work.
- Gradebook: The online gradebook is up.
Click on the "Gradebook" tab above to access it. Login
information can be found on the
course info page.
