Finding the poles of different magnets version 1: Application Experiment
Aim
Find the poles of two different magnets by independent methods and check your answer.
Prior Knowledge
- Magnetic fields
- Magnetic force
- Cathode Ray Tube
Description of the Experiment
Watch the first movie to determine the poles of a horse-shoe and a bar magnet. Check your answers by watching the second video.
Addtional Information
Draw a picture of the apparatus in the first experiment with the wire and the horseshoe magnet, determine the direction of the current in the wire and record the direction of the force exerted by the magnet on the wire and then determine the poles of the magnet. For the bar magnet and the oscilloscope, draw the path of the electrons inside the cathode ray tube before the magnet approaches them. Then draw the direction of the force exerted on the electrons by each of the ends of the magnet After that, use the right hand rule to determine the poles of the magnet. Remember the green dot on the front of the oscilloscope is formed by negatively charged electrons.
